Lunch

14:30 - 15:30

Panel Discussion VII

✅ Issuers’ Debate – The strategic readiness of Polish industry to operationalize CCUS in the era of CBAM

  • Process emissions as an investment priority – why CCUS is a “make-or-break” issue for the cement and chemical sectors, whereas the steel industry is exploring alternative pathways (e.g., hydrogen/DRI)
  • Third-Party Access (TPA) standards – are issuers technically and legally prepared to share transport infrastructure with competitors, as required by EU and Polish regulations (including the role of KAPSDW)?
  • Stream purity and liability – who bears the costs and risks if impurities in the CO₂ from one issuer damage the T&S operator’s shared pipeline network?
  • Monetizing the green premium – is the market (construction, infrastructure) ready to pay a higher price for products decarbonized via CCUS, thereby enabling the project’s business model to close?

Session V: The Role of BECCS and DACCS Technologies

15:30 - 16:00

Introductory presentations:

✅ Analysis of the role of BECCS and DACCS in Poland – an annex to the national CCUS strategy.

✅ Application of BECCS technology in the transformation of the combined heat and power (CHP) sector – conclusions from the BioNETzero project for the national context.

16:00 - 17:00

Panel Discussion VIII

✅The role of BECCS and DACCS technologies in achieving climate neutrality goals for Poland and Europe.

  • Negative emissions as the missing piece of the balance sheet: how many tonnes of CDR does Poland need by 2040 and 2050 to offset hard-to-abate emissions (agriculture, parts of the industrial sector, aviation), and does the annex to the CCUS Strategy provide a realistic answer rather than just a model-based one?
  • District heating as the natural home for BECCS: are Polish biomass-fired CHP plants and waste-to-energy facilities technically and economically ready for CO₂ capture—as demonstrated by the BioNETzero case study—and where do the limits of sustainable biomass availability (RED III) lie?
  • Who will pay for a tonne of negative emissions: the ETS post-2030, CRCF certification, the voluntary market, or national instruments (CCfDs, the Modernization Fund, NFOŚiGW)? Is it currently possible to structure a bankable model for a BECCS project at a Polish CHP plant?
  • DACCS: a realistic option for Poland or a technology “for others”? Costs, energy and heat requirements, and Poland’s position in the value chain regarding the access of distributed sources to CO₂ transport and storage infrastructure.
17:00 - 17:15

Polish CCS Roadmap 2030–2040 – infrastructure, regulations, financing, and initial industrial clusters

  • Foundations through 2027 – comprehensive CCUS Act
  • Strategic decisions by 2030 – summary, focus on implementing a Carbon Contracts for Difference (CCfD) system and conducting initial auctions
  • First hubs and regions (industrial clusters: Płock (petrochemicals), Górażdże (cement and steel), Ożarów (chemicals and cement), and Bielawy (soda ash and cement))
  • Key regulatory gaps – status of costly financial guarantees, clarification of CO₂ stream quality standards, and exemption of geologically stored CO₂ from waste management regulations
  • Shared backbone infrastructure (pipelines connecting southern clusters with central Poland and construction of an offshore export terminal)
  • Market coordination – role of the national coordinator for storage access and monitoring (KAPSDW)
  • Transport and storage capacities

    Strategic Partner

    Holcim Polska

The Holcim Group was formed through the merger of Lafarge and Holcim in 2015. With over 180 years of combined experience, the Holcim Group aims to usher in a new era of modern technologies and innovation in the building materials industry, meeting the challenges of the 21st century. Holcim Polska produces innovative and sustainable building solutions from foundation to roof. It implements technologies and solutions with a reduced carbon footprint, applicable at every stage of a building’s lifecycle, from design and construction to repairs and renovations.

The Kujawy Cement Plant is one of Holcim’s most important plants in Poland. Located in Bielawy, in the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship, it is integrated with a raw material mine, making it one of the largest and most efficient production complexes in Europe. Given the historically high emissions in the cement industry, the Kujawy Cement Plant has been implementing a comprehensive decarbonization program for years. This included switching to the dry method, systematically increasing the share of alternative fuels, reducing the clinker content in cement through the development of low-emission formulations, improving energy efficiency, and developing a circular economy and recycling of construction materials. These actions reduced the emission intensity from approximately 800 kg CO₂/t of cement to approximately 400 kg CO₂/t. To take the next step and approach near-zero emissions, the implementation of CCS technology is essential.

The Go4ECOPlanet project is a full-scale implementation of CCS technology at the Kujawy Cement Plant. Its goal is to capture approximately 1 million tons of CO₂ annually and reduce clinker-related emissions to near zero. The value chain includes post-combustion CO₂ capture from flue gases using the Cryocap™ FG adsorption-cryogenic system, stream liquefaction, rail-sea logistics, and permanent geological disposal. The project’s innovative nature lies in the shift from amine-based technologies to an integrated, solvent-free separation path, which avoids the generation of large amounts of process steam for solvent regeneration and shifts energy demand toward electricity from renewable energy sources. In the initial phase, CO₂ is planned to be injected underground outside Poland.

Prospective geological formations with high CO₂ storage potential have been identified in the Kujawy region. With the development of national infrastructure, appropriate regulations, and public support, the project will enable final storage within Poland. Commissioning of the installation is planned for the turn of the decade. The project has received €228 million in funding from the Innovation Fund.

Concurrently, research and development is underway on solutions supporting decarbonization, including CO₂ mineralization in circular materials and direct CO₂ capture from air.
